Open Office, Locked Future

The cartoon mocks corporate 'openness' as branding theater: companies celebrate sharing, access, and public benefit while using patents, gated platforms, and legal controls to keep the future privately owned.

At a glossy AI company’s 'Open Innovation Day,' executives on a polished stage smile for cameras as they cut a ceremonial ribbon in front of a transparent glass lab entrance. Above them hang oversized banners declaring 'OPEN FOR ALL' and 'DEMOCRATIZING THE FUTURE.' But the glass door behind the ribbon is sealed with an absurdly large keypad lock, biometric scanner, and chain. Inside the lab, a patent clerk rapidly stamps documents 'PROPRIETARY' while shelves of glowing models and research papers sit just out of reach. Outside the glass, independent developers, academics, and startup founders press their hands and laptops against the window like shoppers locked out of a store, realizing the grand opening is only a performance.
