Net-Zero Cruise Launch

Corporate greenwashing: the industry sells a microscopic symbolic gesture as environmental leadership while the real, massive source of pollution is impossible to miss to everyone except the people staging the photo-op.

At a champagne-soaked launch ceremony, cruise executives in white uniforms smash a bottle against the bow of an enormous luxury liner draped with a banner: 'Sailing to a Net-Zero Future.' Cameras flash as they beam and gesture proudly toward a tiny ornamental sapling in a gold planter labeled 'Offset Program' set on a velvet pedestal. The ship behind them dominates the frame, its multiple smokestacks belching a thick black plume that rises and curls forward to blot out the words 'Net-Zero' on the banner. Guests in formalwear keep applauding through the haze, and a PR staffer adjusts the sapling so it stays centered in every photo.
