Net-Zero Through The Exhaust

Climate pageantry that performs virtue for insiders while offloading the actual costs—pollution, inconvenience, and hypocrisy—onto ordinary people. The target is not climate action itself, but elite green branding that masks unchanged systems and treats symbolic gestures as leadership.

A polished, prominently branded summit shuttle dominates the frame in a reserved curbside lane outside a convention center bannered for a global climate summit. The bus is wrapped in cheerful green graphics and oversized text reading “NET-ZERO SHUTTLE,” complete with leaf icons and a slogan about sustainable leadership. But the engine is visibly idling, pumping a dense black-gray exhaust cloud directly across the bike lane and sidewalk, where cyclists, a parent with a stroller, and pedestrians cough or shield their faces. Through the tinted windows, relaxed delegates in suits clink reusable water bottles and conference tote bags, smiling as if participating in a model of climate virtue. The humor lands on the visual contradiction: the clean branding and elite self-congratulation are immaculate, while the real-world effect is dirty, selfish, and literally pushed onto the public outside.
