Freedom Badge Swipe

Corporate culture praises individuality only after converting it into a managed, marketable, policy-compliant product. The cartoon mocks how institutions turn selfhood into branding while pretending that standardization is empowerment.

A polished tech-office lobby is staged like a shrine to self-expression: a towering mural proclaims “BE YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF” in inspiring corporate typography above airport-style turnstiles. A line of employees waits to badge in, each person wearing nearly identical neutral workwear and the same upbeat expression, differentiated only by company-approved ‘individuality’ accessories—rainbow lanyards, enamel flair, quirky stickers, pronoun pins, and branded tote charms. At the scanner, a monitor flashes compliance-style prompts such as ‘Authenticity Verified’ or ‘Expression Not Recognized.’ Nearby, a kiosk offers preselected identity add-ons from categories like ‘Bold,’ ‘Creative,’ and ‘Disruptive.’ The joke lands in the visual contradiction: uniqueness is mandatory, but only in approved, scannable formats.
